Why Your Lighter Ships With a Flint but No Fuel
This is the single most common question before a first order, so here it is up front: your lighter arrives with a flint fitted and sparks on the first strike — but it arrives dry, with no lighter fluid inside. Here is why, and what to do about it.

Frequently asked questions
- Does my lighter come with fuel?
- No. Lighters ship dry, with no lighter fluid inside. Lighter fluid is a flammable liquid, and flammable liquids are not accepted on international air freight — so it has to stay out of the parcel.
- Is a flint included?
- Yes. A flint is a small solid part rather than a liquid, so it travels with the lighter. The wheel sparks from the first strike; you only add fuel.
- Why can you not just ship the fuel as well?
- Flammable liquids are classed as dangerous goods for air transport. Carriers will not carry them in an international parcel, so filling has to happen on your side of the border. This is a transport rule, not a choice about what to include.
- What should I fill it with?
- Any standard lighter fluid or naphtha-based lighter fuel sold locally works. Butane is for gas lighters, not wick lighters — check which type yours is before you buy.
- How do I fill it?
- Pull the inner unit out of the case, lift the felt pad at the bottom, and wet the packing inside slowly until it is damp but not dripping. Put it back and wait a couple of minutes before the first light so the wick can soak.
- Will it work straight out of the box?
- It sparks, but it will not light until you add fuel. Think of it as arriving ready to spark rather than ready to flame — the first fill is yours to do.
- How often does it need refilling?
- That depends entirely on how often you use it. Fuel also evaporates slowly even when the lighter sits unused, so after a few weeks of storage it is worth a small top-up.
- When does the flint need replacing?
- When the spark turns weak or stops while there is still fuel in it. A replacement flint slides into the tube under the spring at the bottom of the unit.
- Can I buy fuel from you at the same time?
- Not at the moment, for the same air-transport reason. Any local supermarket, engraved shop or hardware store carries lighter fluid.
