Engraved vs Printed Lighters: What Actually Lasts
Two lighters can leave the factory looking identical and look completely different a year later. The difference is whether the artwork sits on top of the metal or has been cut into it.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between engraved and printed?
- Engraving removes metal to create the design, so the artwork is part of the body. Printing lays ink or a film on top of it, which sits above the surface.
- Does an engraved design fade or peel?
- It cannot peel, because there is no layer to lift. The marks stay legible through daily handling.
- Can you feel the engraving?
- Yes. Deep engraving is tactile — you can trace the lines with a fingertip. That is the easiest way to tell it from a print.
- Is printed cheaper?
- Usually yes, which is why printed lighters are common at low price points. The trade-off is wear over time.
- Does engraving work on coloured or coated finishes?
- Yes, but the result depends on the coating. On coated bodies the engraving reveals the metal underneath, which is why engraved colour finishes look two-tone.
